In a new opinion piece Shannon writes that “Now is the time to use our agency—to be more civically involved, not less; to have the uncomfortable conversations we’ve been avoiding; to stop setting intellectual traps for those who are less informed; to listen for the sake of learning, instead of waiting for our turn to speak; to do meaningful things for one another, no matter how small or local the upside.”

To complement the Baccalaureate speech given by ME Gov. Janet Mills, the school gave a copy of Shannon’s book — as well as the new memoir by its Commencement speaker Doris Kearns Goodwin — to every graduating senior. “[Gov. Mills’s] commitment to Maine’s people made our state one of the safest in the nation throughout the entire pandemic,” Colby Pres. David Greene told students. “I hope you read the book that we gave you that shows what she was thinking and what she was doing behind the scenes.”

In a remote session of Prof. Anna Mahoney’s undergrad course on “Gender and Policy Leadership” Gov. Mills told students reading In Other Words, Leadership for the class that finding common ground between stakeholders is essential to governance. Shannon discussed the challenges she faced as a journalist in writing for a broad audience about one of the most divisive periods in US history.

Shannon shared her perspective on the governor’s rapport with the public, especially when her decisions tested the public’s trust, having studied both intensively in the course of writing her new book In Other Words, Leadership.
